Local Governance: What Municipalities Actually Do

The services local governments are responsible for, and how a local unit is structured.

Local governments in Nepal - metropolitan cities, sub-metropolitan cities, municipalities and rural municipalities - are responsible for the services closest to citizens' daily lives. That includes basic health and education, local infrastructure such as roads and drinking water, agricultural extension, and local records such as birth and death registration.

Each local unit has its own elected assembly and executive, giving citizens a direct role in local decision-making.
